For this reason, lightning protection standards include a risk calculation which, in some countries, is incorporated into regulations that make this analysis mandatory. In addition, the unpredictability of the phenomenon and its high destructive power mean that, in certain circumstances and according to some local regulations, installation changes from being advisable to being compulsory. In any case, the installation of a lightning protection system (LPS) requires the specific technical method for the correct design of that system to be followed, in accordance with the applicable standard\u00b9,<sup>2<\/sup>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A lightning rod is a device with one main function: to receive (or actively capture, in the case of Early Streamer Emission (ESE) air terminals) the lightning discharge and conduct it safely to earth, as a measure to protect structures and everything inside them, including both equipment and living beings.<\/p>\n<p>Protection against atmospheric discharges can be provided with different types of lightning rods, from simple rod air terminals to those which, like Early Streamer Emission (ESE) air terminals, use interception technology to capture discharges. Some standards do include specific provisions for this safety technology against atmospheric discharges\u00b2.<\/p>\n<p>Lightning protection systems include other complementary devices that are necessary for a complete LPS, such as surge protection devices, as well as useful accessories for their maintenance and effectiveness, such as lightning strike counters.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"When_is_a_lightning_rod_required_What_type_of_lightning_rod_should_I_choose\"><\/span>When is a lightning rod required? What type of lightning rod should I choose?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The choice of lightning rod type to protect a structure is only specified in some standards. There are two different types, classified according to the technology they use: Franklin rods and Early Streamer Emission (ESE) air terminals.<\/p>\n<p>Capture systems using rods and meshes consist of installing air terminals at all possible strike points and distributing and dissipating the lightning discharge current through a network of conductors. The cross-sections and materials must comply with the provisions of the standards that define this type of system (IEC\/EN 62305 series, IEC\/EN 62561 series)\u00b9.<\/p>\n<p>Early Streamer Emission (ESE) air terminals operate by taking advantage of the electrical characteristics involved in lightning formation. This phenomenon begins with a downward leader that propagates in different directions and, as it approaches the ground, can strike any object. ESE air terminals are distinguished by their ability to emit a continuous upward leader before other elements, making them the preferred strike point within their protection radius. In this way, the lightning rod acts as a controlled strike point, conducting the lightning current safely to earth and preventing damage to the structure. The main standards governing these lightning protection systems are UNE 21186, NF C 17-102 and NP 4426\u00b2.<\/p>\n<p>Aplicaciones Tecnol\u00f3gicas offers the DAT CONTROLER\u00ae range of Early Streamer Emission (ESE) air terminals. Is there an international standard?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The obligation to install a lightning protection system in a building is set out in regulations that may vary from one country to another, but in general, it depends on several factors, such as lightning density in the different regions of each country. In some countries, critical structures such as facilities housing flammable or explosive materials, hospitals, educational centres or buildings above a certain height are subject to specific regulations that require them to be protected.<\/p>\n<p>The international reference for the installation of lightning protection systems is IEC 62305\u00b9, published by the International Electrotechnical Commission with the aim of serving as a basis for standards and regulations in all countries, but it is not mandatory and does not imply the cancellation of national standards.<\/p>\n<p>IEC 62305 serves as the basis for standards developed in other countries such as Spain, France or Brazil, for example. In this standard, the basic method for calculating the risk of a lightning discharge is developed in IEC\/EN 62305-2\u00b9. This standard defines a risk assessment procedure for a structure and, once a tolerable risk has been established, allows protective measures to be selected in order to reduce the risk below that limit.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The risk calculation, according to IEC 62305, is the technical method used to determine whether a building needs lightning protection. On the other hand, each country may have a standard (non-mandatory) and a set of laws or codes that constitute regulation.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, countries such as Spain, France and Portugal have specific standards on how to install Early Streamer Emission (ESE) air terminals, such as those in Aplicaciones Tecnol\u00f3gicas\u2019 DAT CONTROLER family. These standards specify the tests that define the characteristics of the ESE air terminal\u00b2 and how to calculate its protection radius, as well as detailing the installation instructions. Lightning protection system standards establish post-impact protocols so that the effectiveness of the protection system against atmospheric discharges is not compromised\u00b9,2.<\/p>\n<p>Installations should always be inspected after a strike, but periodic inspections are also recommended to check the condition of the installation. For example, IEC 62305\u00b9 suggests that level I or II systems (high risk) should have annual visual inspections and full inspections every two years, while for levels III-IV, visual inspections every two years and full inspections every four years are accepted.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to visual inspections, other devices in lightning protection systems (LPS), such as lightning counters, can determine whether a strike has occurred before a visual inspection.
