And are there standards that apply to the design and verification of the earthing systems themselves? The answer is yes in both cases. The main international standards explicitly recognise exothermic welding as a valid connection method, precisely because of the reliability and durability it provides compared to other solutions. Likewise, the regulatory framework for earthing systems covers the entire cycle: from measuring soil resistivity through a geoelectrical study, to safety, sizing, installation and periodic verification requirements.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Earthing systems have become an essential element of any electrical installation. Their overall condition affects numerous variables that can influence both the performance and the service life of equipment connected to the electrical network and, ultimately, the safety of people in and around those facilities.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/webstore.iec.ch\/en\/publication\/63699\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">IEC 60364<\/a> is the international standard for low-voltage electrical installations in buildings. It defines safety, design, installation and verification requirements to prevent electric shock and fire. In its different parts, it sets out requirements for earthing conductors, equipotential bonding, minimum cross-sections and connection methods (IEC 60364-5-54), as well as specifications for specific installations, such as solar photovoltaic power supply systems (IEC 60364-7-712). IEC 60364, like other international standards, serves as a reference for standards and regulations in many countries, but it is not mandatory in itself and does not annul national standards.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/standards.ieee.org\/ieee\/81\/11218\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">IEEE 81<\/a> (IEEE Guide for Measuring Earth Resistivity, Ground Impedance, and Earth Surface Potentials of a Grounding System) is the global reference guide for measuring soil resistivity, earth impedance and surface potentials in electrical systems. Measuring soil resistivity through a geoelectrical study is a step that makes a decisive difference when designing an efficient earthing system from the outset.<\/p>\n<p>Lightning protection systems (LPS) must have their own earthing system, independent of the general earthing system, and the characteristics required for their installation are set out in the international <a href=\"https:\/\/webstore.iec.ch\/en\/publication\/27136\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">IEC 62305<\/a> standard and its different national transpositions.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Standards_on_exothermic_welding\"><\/span>Standards on exothermic welding<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/at3w.com\/en\/smart-earthing\/apliweld-secure-exothermic-welding\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Exothermic welding<\/a>, also known as aluminothermic welding, is a process that achieves the molecular union of the materials to be welded by means of a filler metal. In the case of earthing systems, the metal is molten copper, which causes the total or partial fusion of the ends of the parts. Since the copper resulting from the reaction has a high degree of purity and forms a solid section larger than that of the conductor itself, the electrical properties of the joint equal, and may even exceed, those of the original conductor. This translates into greater durability and high resistance to wear, essential qualities for achieving an efficient and reliable earthing system.<\/p>\n<p>This type of welding is prescribed as such in national and international standards. Although it is not the only type of connection covered by these regulations, its superior characteristics compared with other types of joints make it the most recommended option.<\/p>\n<p>IEC 60364-5-54, dedicated to earthing arrangements and protective conductors in low-voltage electrical installations, expressly refers to exothermic welding as a valid method for carrying out certain connections in earthing systems. Clause 542.2.8 establishes that, where an earth electrode consists of several parts that must be connected, the connection may be made by exothermic welding, pressure connectors, clamps or other suitable mechanical connectors. Similarly, clause 542.3.2 states that the connection between the earthing conductor and the earth electrode must be properly executed and electrically satisfactory, again citing exothermic welding as one of the accepted solutions.<\/p>\n<p>The exothermic welding process must always be carried out in the safest possible way for the person performing it. Apliweld\u00ae Secure+ by Aplicaciones Tecnol\u00f3gicas features a remote electronic system that allows the operator to remain at a safe distance at the moment of ignition. In Spain, specifically, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insst.es\/documentacion\/colecciones-tecnicas\/ntp-notas-tecnicas-de-prevencion\/29-serie-ntp-numeros-996-a-1030-ano-2014\/nota-tecnica-de-prevencion-ntp-1028\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NTP 1028<\/a> recommends this type of ignition as an occupational safety measure.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Apliweld\u00ae Secure+<\/strong> also complies with the North American <a href=\"https:\/\/at3w.com\/en\/blog\/ul-certificate-for-apliweld-secure-exothermic-welding\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>UL 467 Grounding and Bonding Equipment certification<\/strong><\/a>, which is specific to connections used in earthing systems and reflects the reliability of those joints. To obtain this quality and safety mark issued by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ul.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Underwriters Laboratories (UL)<\/a>, the connections made with Aplicaciones Tecnol\u00f3gicas\u2019 exothermic welding have passed a current test and a stringent mechanical test consisting of two parts: a torsion test and a tensile test.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Standards_on_earthing_systems\"><\/span>Standards on earthing systems<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Earthing system projects must also follow certain regulatory requirements in order to fulfil their main function. These are mainly set out in IEC 60364-5-54.<\/p>\n<p>In clauses 542.1, 542.2, 542.3 and 542.4, supplemented by clauses 543 and 544, this standard establishes that a general earthing system must be reliable, durable, resistant to corrosion and mechanical stresses, sized according to soil conditions and foreseeable currents, correctly joined by electrically satisfactory connections &#8211; including exothermic welding &#8211; and connected to a main earthing bar that integrates the installation\u2019s protection and equipotential bonding.<\/p>\n<p>In Spain, ITC-BT-18 of the Low Voltage Electrotechnical Regulation (REBT) sets minimum dimensions for electrodes such as rods, plates and bare conductors, and regulates earthing installations to limit voltages that may appear on exposed conductive parts, ensure the operation of protective devices and reduce the risk arising from an electrical fault.<\/p>\n<p>This instruction establishes that the installation must prevent dangerous potential differences in the building and its surroundings, allow fault currents or currents of atmospheric origin to pass to earth, and maintain its earth resistance over time. To this end, it includes electrodes such as rods, tubes, strips, bare conductors, plates, rings, metal meshes or buried concrete reinforcement, and requires that the materials and execution do not have their mechanical and electrical resistance compromised by corrosion.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, the Technical Guide for the application of <a href=\"https:\/\/industria.gob.es\/Calidad-Industrial\/seguridadindustrial\/instalacionesindustriales\/baja-tension\/Paginas\/reglamento-2002.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ITC-BT-18<\/a> recommends minimum dimensions for electrodes and considers connections made, among other methods, by exothermic welding to be electrically correct, provided that they do not damage either the conductors or the earth electrodes.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/at3w.com\/en\/smart-earthing\/earthing-system-projects-4-0\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">earthing system projects<\/a> developed by <strong>Aplicaciones Tecnol\u00f3gicas S.A.<\/strong> are specially designed to meet all the requirements that an earthing system prepared for Industry 4.0 must fulfil. This includes, at the design stage, carrying out a geoelectrical study of the subsoil. This study enables its electrical characterisation by determining the number of strata, their thickness and the resistivity of each one. Resistivity measurement makes it possible to estimate the earthing resistance of a structure or system and the potential gradients, including step and touch voltages. It also supports the calculation of inductive coupling between nearby power and communication circuits, as well as the design of cathodic protection systems.<\/p>\n<p>Resistivity measurement is based on injecting current between two external electrodes and measuring the potential between two internal electrodes. The ratio between potential and current makes it possible to obtain a resistivity value known as apparent resistivity. By separating the electrodes from each other, a curve showing the variation in apparent resistivity with the spacing between the electrodes is obtained. Interpretation of these curves makes it possible to determine the stratification of the ground. There are several methods for measuring resistivity, but the most commonly used are the Wenner and Schlumberger configurations. The methodology followed in the <a href=\"https:\/\/at3w.com\/en\/smart-earthing\/advanced-geoelectrical-studies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">geoelectrical studies<\/a> carried out by <strong>Aplicaciones Tecnol\u00f3gicas S.A.<\/strong> is based on the procedures standardised in IEEE Std 81<\/p>\n<h3>Standards relating to earthing systems for lightning rods<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/at3w.com\/en\/smart-lightning\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lightning protection systems (LPS)<\/a> have the main function of protecting buildings and structures from the destructive effects of atmospheric discharges by conducting the current to earth.<\/p>\n<p>Even if the structure to be protected already has an earthing system, the international <a href=\"https:\/\/webstore.iec.ch\/en\/publication\/27136\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">IEC 62305<\/a> standard and its national transpositions establish that LPS must have their own earthing system. This standard also establishes that one earth termination must be provided for each down conductor, with the number of electrodes determined by the required protection level and the type of arrangement selected (type A or type B), according to IEC 62305-3. This must be bonded to the general earthing system by means of a spark gap where it cannot be done directly, and it must have an exclusive resistance below 10 ohms.
