Electrical storm statistics for 2025

A total of 2.010 million lightning events were recorded globally in 2025. This number includes cloud-to-cloud and cloud-to-ground lightning strikes.

United States, one of the countries with the highest electrical activity, recorded a total of 251.8 million lightning events in 2025.

  1. Florida (117.8)
  2. Oklahoma (97.7)
  3. Louisiana (93.1)
  4. Mississippi (89.2)
  5. Arkansas (88.8)

In total, 251.8 million lightning events were recorded in the USA in 2025, approximately 20% more than in 2024.

EUROPE ELECTRICAL STORM STATISTICS

In Europe, approximately 1.226 million cloud-to-ground lightning strikes were recorded in 2025.

Thunderstorm activity was detected on 360 days of the year.

64% of thunderstorm activity was concentrated between June and August.

June was the month with the highest electrical activity, with approximately 284,200 cloud-to-ground lightning strikes recorded in Europe.

  2. Italy (385,577)
  3. France (267,502)
  4. Germany (83,443)

Electrical activity in Europe decreased significantly compared with 2024. Approximately 1.226 million cloud-to-ground lightning strikes were recorded in 2025, compared with more than 1.967 million in 2024.
