Aplicaciones Tecnológicas S.A. protects Paraguay’s tallest skyscraper from lightning storms

Aplicaciones Tecnológicas S.A. has designed and supplied the lightning protection system for Torre Ícono in Asunción, the tallest building in Paraguay at 142 metres high. The project has been carried out through the official distributor in the country, INCOTER S.R.L.

Torre Ícono, the tallest building in Paraguay, is protected against the effects of electrical storms with the technology of Aplicaciones Tecnológicas S.A. It is a tower with a height of more than 140 metres, with an Early Streamer Emission (ESE) lightning rod on its roof, a DAT CONTROLER® device. The lightning protection system project has been carried out in collaboration with INCOTER SRL, the official distributor of Aplicaciones Tecnológicas S.A. in Paraguay.

The Ícono Tower is a project by architect Carlos A. Jiménez of Est Arquitectura SRL, executed by Constructora Gómez Nuñez S.A. The skyscraper is located at the head of the historic centre of Asunción, in a traditional mixed-use district housing embassies, cultural centres, residential buildings and offices. In addition to its size, its red colour contrasts with the dominant green of the area, making it visible from practically the entire city.

In addition to being the tallest building in the entire country, Torre Ícono has another special feature: it is the first building in Asunción in which the loft concept has been applied to each floor for its owners to design and complete as they wish.

Skyscrapers such as Torre Ícono in Paraguay are prime locations for lightning strikes, to which special attention must be paid. In these cases, to calculate the protection area of this type of structure, the lightning risk calculation regulations consider a surrounding area of 3 times its height. Furthermore, according to these same regulations, for buildings higher than 60 metres, the risk of lateral impacts on structures must also be taken into account.

Early Streamer Emission devices (ESE Air Terminals): the best available technology

A lightning arrester with an Early Streamer Emission device, also known by its abbreviation (ESE) or under the name of ionizing lightning rod, is an active external lightning protection system.

When it starts, a lightning bolt travels by a downward tracer which propagates in jumps in any direction. As it approaches the earth, it can strike any object. The purpose of any lightning arrester is to become the discharge point of the lightning strike, so that its impact is controlled and does not cause damage to people or infrastructure.

The devices of the DAT CONTROLER ® range of Aplicaciones Tecnológicas S.A. are prepared to operate in the most adverse weather conditions and are certified in accordance with the AENOR N certification.
